According to the National Institute of Mental Health about 6.7% of Americans over the age of 18 experience major depressive disorder. Women are 70% more likely than men to suffer from depression during their lifetime.
Symptoms of major depression are feelings of sadness, emptiness, hopelessness and helplessness. People experiencing major depression often lose interest in activities, withdraw from family and friends and “build a wall” around themselves. The brightness in a patient’s life gets lost and the blues take over for good. In addition, mental illnesses are often seen as a taboo topic and a wall to the outside world “conceals” the problem.
Research data indicate that about 50-60% of people suffering from major depression do not seek medical help despite the fact that depression can be treated effectively.
