Love is an emotion and so is hope. Indifference, however, is the lack of emotion, the lack of an opinion, the lack of interest.
There are a variety of reasons for indifference.
We are exposed to so many terrible news on TV or social media, there are times that the only way we can cope is by shutting down to the trauma around us.
Sometimes, we are overwhelmed by the demands in our personal lives, in our relationships, in our careers, through illnesses. We have enough on our plates to solve, we don’t need anybody else’s problems on top of our own.
In certain situations, we hide behind the lack of actions displayed by others. Nobody steps forward to act, so why should I? The bystander effect is real, and inaction is contagious.
Although we all are guilty of feeling detached at times, it is important that apathy does not become the default response.
Let’s try to connect to those who suffer and express our compassion through action. Sometimes all we might be able to do is to take an intellectual approach by learning more about a certain illness affecting a person, by understanding the resources that are available for those who struggle, and eventually, by being able to contribute to improving the circumstances of the victim’s situation.
Every small step will make a difference as we all are striving for happiness. No matter how tiny the step is that we take, it is better than indifference.
Wishing you a week with love, compassion, and action!
